In 1972 Prince William of Gloucester was killed when his light aircraft crashed during an air race; in 1996 the 15-year marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales ended in divorce; in 2000 the food company Nestlé agreed to contribute $14.6 million towards a fund for Jewish organisations to meet possible claims over the use of slave labour under the Nazis in the Second World War; in 2004 Kelly Holmes won gold in the 1,500m at the Athens Olympics. She had earlier won the 800m and became the UK’s first Olympic middle-distance double gold medallist since Albert Hill in 1920.
